Hardwood board repair

Replacing boards that can't be sanded out: pet stains, water damage, burns and broken boards.

What can't be sanded out

Most scratches, dents and worn finish come out with sanding. A few things go too deep:

  • Pet urine stains. The dark marks go into the wood fibres and usually stay black after sanding. Those boards need to be replaced.
  • Water damage. Boards that have gone black or soft need replacing. Boards that are only cupped often flatten out once the moisture is gone.
  • Burns, deep gouges and split boards.

If a floor is cupped from a leak, the cause needs to be fixed and the floor needs time to dry before sanding. Sanding a cupped floor too early leaves the boards crowned once they dry out.

Matching new boards

Replacement boards are woven into the existing floor so the joints are staggered, then the whole area is sanded and finished together. New wood is lighter than aged wood, and a full sand and matching finish closes most of that gap.

Price

Repairs are quoted on site. A few boards typically add $250 to $600 to a refinishing job.
